Abstract: The modern approach to area management in recent times implies an efficient, reliable and qualitative acquisition of spatial data. Modern surveying equipment provides more flexible and effective procedures for data collection that provide increasing opportunities for qualitative decisionmaking of end users. Simultaneously, these data represent the spatial basis for the implementation of GIS systems, whose successful utilisation in business systems within local government paves the way for the establishment of "e-government". This paper presents the results of the comparative advantages of data acquisition using the mobile mapping system (MMS) and the method for realization of the idea of effective area management, based on the example of the Directorate for Construction of the Municipality of Bačka Palanka, Serbia.
