Processing cost in case of message parsing on the smart IoT gateway: Exploring the costs of unifying the message format to Protocol Buffer

© 2017 IEEE. It can be seen that the vision of the future networking is more focused on the things, media and services, rather than people. With the increasing importance of the Internet of Things, as well as the diversity of the objects, it is crucial to achieve the highest possible level of interoperability. This means that information exchanged needs to have the same format; in addition, data needs to be processed before being sent to the cloud. The best places for unifying the message format are Smart Gateway, Smart Network and Fog Computing. This paper surveys the processing cost of unifying the message format on the level between smart objects and the Cloud. The unified message format would not be JSON, but Protocol Buffer, and the place for unifying this data is chosen to be the Smart IoT Gateway.
