Rapid development of the power electronics technology in the last century accompanied by advancements made in the field of control strategies, resulted in frequency converters becoming almost inseparable components in the modern-day electrical drives. Increased efficiency, torque and speed control, automation possibilities and machine stress reduction are some of the most common arguments for using frequency converters in any industry application. However frequency converter offers the possibility to increase the power capacity of a driven machine continuously, thus extending the range of the constant torque operation and shifting the flux weakening to a significantly higher frequencies. This paper will not only treat some of the most important aspects of such drive operation, but will also provide valuable experimental results, thus indicating the most important factors to be considered when practically exploiting drive in the described manner.
