Abstract: This paper describes one solution for air quality monitoring where data are collected via RF wireless communication in public frequency band. This solution uses low-cost RF modules and encrypted data transmission for minimization annual maintenance cost which is a huge disadvantage with GPRS systems. Low-cost gas sensors provide alarm functioning of the system, but basic information about monitored gas concentrations can also be acquired. The main objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of using such a system in urban areas, buildings, industrial facilities and other areas where changes in the concentration of harmful gases that can cause serious consequences. Integration of microcontroller inside sensing process allows to implement automatic monitoring of gas concentration and support for management of the communication and alarms. © 2012 MANT.
