Abstract: © 2019 IEEE. In this paper, a new method for setting and coordination of protection equipment in distribution feeders with high penetration of doubly-fed induction machines (DFIMs) is proposed. DFIMs have different fault currents than synchronous/induction machines, so the relay protection methods based on traditional short-circuit calculation results cannot be used in presence of high penetration of DFIMs. To overcome this issue, in this paper the traditional relay protection method is modified to accurately consider DFIMs' fault responses. Both severe and mild fault cases are considered by the proposed method. The method is tested on a distribution feeder with high penetration of DFIMs and the results show advantages of the proposed method relative to the existing ones.
