Abstract: © 2015 by Scrivener Publishing LLC. All rights reserved. Thermal activation has been recognized as one of the key phases in producing layered double hydroxide (LDH)-based catalysts of specific active structure emerging from the initial LDHs matrix and resulting in non-stoichiometric mixed oxides with specific properties. Based on the studies cited, it could be stated that the genesis of the active structure is influenced by many interconnected phenomena, which, from the other side, are key factors for versatile application of these specific - tailor-made materials. The comprehensive overview of the research oriented to structural and textural properties of LHDs family, linked with both traditional and novel synthesis methods as well as with thermal history, represents a research window to the development, characterization, and application of LDH-based catalysts. Special emphasis has been given on the new potential fields of catalytic application, such as photocatalysts emerging from nanoscale interactions of TiO2 and LHDs matrix structures.
