This paper deals with initial estimation of fault location in the medium voltage distribution networks. Two approaches for estimation of the fault location are analysed: The method based on measured impedance and method based on measured current module. Advantages and shortcomings of both methods are briefly described. In addition, an analysis of quality provided by combining both methods is performed and a combined method is established. The considerations in the paper are illustrated by examples where real distribution network data are used.en
