Abstract: The separation ability and retention behaviour of normal and reversed phase TLC, with non-aqueous and aqueous organic mobile phases, have been studied by measuring the retention constants of a series of variously substituted 2,4-dioxotetrahydro-1,3-thiazoles. The addition of a small volume of aqueous ammonia in a non-aqueous mobile phase miscible with water, generally increased retention of the compounds studied on silica gel layers and simulataneously affected separation order and selectivity. The retention constants measured on cellulose layers were linearly correlated with the pH of the eluent aqueous phase. © 1994 Friedr. Vieweg & Sohn Verlagsgesellschaft mbH.
