Bacteria were isolated from both poplar and other plant species. Antagonistic effects of these bacteria on growth and germination of Dothichiza populea were tested. A total of 195 bacterial isolates were collected, but only 12 isolates from poplars and 31 isolates from other hosts distinctly reduced growth of D. populea in dual cultures. Some of these growth inhibiting isolates were also examined for their influence on germination of pycnospores. Only some bacterial isolates from poplars inhibited germination, whereas others even stimulated it. On the other hand, all isolates from other hosts than poplars significantly reduced germination rate. Copyright © 1992, Wiley Blackwell. All rights reserveden
