The possibility of metastable hybridization of optical and mechanical excitons in the crystal is analysed. It is shown that the hybrid excitations can appear with a lifetime of the order of 10-14 s. The main consequences of the hybridization are the appearance of an additional peak of the absorption coefficient, lying in the infra-red region, as well as the induced transformations of the optical into the mechanical energy and vice versa. © 1979 Società Italiana di Fisica.en
